Squaring Negative Numbers

I have a problem with this video. For the answer to a negative number squared to result in a positive number, the integer has to be in a set of brackets with the exponent on the outside of the brackets. In this video it is written -3^2 and the voice says "negative 3 times negative 3" which is incorrect. See examples below:

(-3)^2 = (-3) x (-3) = +9 (the exponent tells you to repeat everything inside of the brackets!)

but

-3^2 = - 3 x 3 = - 9 (the exponent is only applied to the 3)

I feel you definitely need the parentheses or else you are just squaring the three.
